Mother's Day Primary Talk

David volunteered to give the talk in Primary on Mother's Day. We like to let him prepare his own talks. They usually end up being pretty short, but they are sincere and I think we're teaching him to share what he feels is important.

I just found the copy of his talk today and wanted to share it:

"Today is Mother's Day.

I love my mom. She has a baby in her tummy. I named my baby Goldfish. I don't know if it's a brother or a sister, but I'm really excited to be a big brother.

I'm happy that Heavenly Father sent me to Earth to have a family. Families help us live and grow. They love us and teach us about Heavenly Father and Jesus. I'm thankful that my family gets to go to church together. I'm thankful that Heavenly Father gave me my family because I know that they love me very much and I love them, too.

In the name of Jesus Christ, amen."

My boy is so cool.

Brian and David got haircuts last night. David was a little nervous because we went to a new place. Being the inexperienced and naive mother that I am, I told him that *he* could tell the guy how to cut his hair. I was thinking he might say "short like Dad's" or "not so short on the top"... both of which he's said before. However, I am a woman of my word, so when he told the guy he wanted a lightening bolt on the top of his head, I kept my word and decided to help the guy make it as "acceptable" as possible...

Sigh... hair grows back, right?

Today, David and Brian have been cleaning out the Jeep, getting it ready to sell. David discovered quite a treasure during the process, and came running inside to ask me a question:

David: "Mom, can I have a cookie?"

Me: "Why don't you wait until you and Dad are all finished outside so you can wash your hands first?"

David: "But I want to see if I can trade Dad a cookie for this really cool compass so I can keep it!"

It turned out to be a cookie VERY well-spent, because David soon discovered that the arrows on the compass GLOW IN THE DARK!!!

David has been noticing (and - sometimes to my distress - commenting on) the changes my body is making throughout this pregnancy. His latest observation, while trying to snuggle onto my lap:

"Mommy, your nipples are growing bigger. Is that so they can be refrigerators when Goldfish is born?"

Well... technically, yes!
Sunday we were eating lunch after church. David had just finished guzzling a glass of milk, then wiped his mouth on his new white t-shirt.

Me: "David, please don't wipe your mouth on your sleeve, you'll get your shirt dirty!"

David: "No, I won't. Milk's white!"

I had no rebuttal, and he wore the shirt for the rest of the day...

I told David to get dressed so we can go play games at Lena's house, to which he responded:

"Boring games? Because I'm a big kid now, and big kids get to play boring games with the moms."

Do you think he might be talking about *board* games...?

Brian had to work at Camp Williams Friday morning, so we slept over at Gramma's house Thursday night. While we were there, I finally remembered to empty out David's Winnie the Pooh bank so we can deposit the money into his savings account. We filled a gallon-sized Ziploc freezer bag with pennies (and a few quarters, dimes, and nickels...), and the end result was quite heavy! The next morning, we woke up to a strange sound. Shortly after it started, our bedroom door opened, and there was David, dragging the bag I had placed on the kitchen table (where I normally put the 5 pennies we use as incentive for him to stay in bed each night) into our room:

David: "Mom, I'm angry at you."
Me: "Why?"
David: "Because you gave me too many pennies."
Me: "Well, I can put them into my bank account if you don't want them."
David (in the same exhasperated, self-sacrificing tone he uses when I ask him to scoop Jaxon's poop): "Oh, al-RIIIGHT! I'll keep them!"

Such a selfless kid.

David came with me to my Dr's appointment today and he got to hear Goldfish's heartbeat. At first he was a bit scared by what he heard, but once the Dr convinced him that the "crunching" noise was just from the tool on my belly, he was really excited to hear the "whum-whum-whum" of the baby's heart.

When we left, he enthusiastically told Brian all about it: "... and Goldfish's heart sounds like 'whum-whum-whum'. And the 'crunch-crunch' was just the tool in the slimy stuff on mom's tummy, it wasn't Goldfish eating her."

It's really cute that he's so protective of me.
